During my time at ST. ROBO, I worked on the UEFA Euro 2024 draw, taking place in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The building is renowned for its organic architecture, resembling a voronoi pattern throughout its structure.
I was tasked with creating a subtle animated background loop for the 17 meter long screen used to display the drawn teams. Within the main hall, the walls and balustrades are shaped using a similar voronoi pattern combined with fine grooves, a design intended to enhance the acoustics of the space.
We decided to incorporate this distinctive architectural element into the background visual. Rather than designing something that would stand apart from its surroundings, we extended the balustrades behind the screen as three dimensional elements. The grooved voronoi structure was generated procedurally, giving us flexibility in shaping the geometry to fit the screen. To merge UEFA's brand identity with the architectural character of the Elbphilharmonie, we added localized blue lights that moved gradually across the surface, casting soft shadows and giving the object a sense of depth and motion.
The project was realized under the creative direction of Philip Hillers.
